Nintendo Wii GOLF game:

I was impressed with the Wii interactive golf game, had great fun playing Wii pro-golf What was surprising most of the family including adults did not understand any of the golf terms or how to play golf? This was a dis-advantage even with a computer game They could only play at beginners level, those keen to learn the terms and rules, so could play the pro-game. So the intent of this article is to teach the basis of golf. Every one knows in football what a goal is, in golf they may not know what a Birdie is?

Golf Course

Golf an outdoor game; the course is about 7000 yards divided into sections called holes.
Individual holes may vary in length from 100 to 550 yards; each hole begins at the tee and ends at the hole, to complete the hole the golf ball must be propelled into the hole. The object of the game is to advance the ball around the course using as few strokes as possible.

From the tee each player tries to drive the ball onto the fairway, a carefully tended strip of land, the fairway is short grass, on either side there will be rough areas of long grass, bushes, or trees. Also hazards natural and man made, including sand-filled bunkers, water hazards lakes, and ponds. At the far end of the Fairway is the putting green, the grass short and smooth, not necessarily flat most greens have contours, down hill – up hill slopes to the hole, the short grass is smooth like a snooker table and will permit the ball to roll easily after it has been given a gentle stroke know as a putt.

Golf: Main shots

Drive: which hopefully is a long shot from the tee? The approach shot is played from the fair way towards the green – a number of different clubs can be used Long Irons – Fairway woods. Your selection will depend on the distance to the green and other key factors, such as the wind where your ball has landed. (In the rough, on the fairway, or even in a fairway bunker)

Once within 100yds of the green it becomes a chip shot – normally played with a pitching wedge.

Normal set of 14 golf clubs are divided into those known as woods, with large heads now made of metal and those know as irons with heads made of steel or titanium. The shafts can be made of steel or graphite.

Woods are numbered 1 to 5, the irons in the bag normally numbered 3 to 9 which include your pitching wedge -sand wedge – putter. One of the strange things in golf the lower the number on the club the more distance it is design to hit. E.G. your 3 Iron should go 200 yards; your 9 Iron will only go 110 yards. One golden rule we teach is trust your club just maintain your normal smooth swing do not change your swing just change the club.

Forms of Competition

NOTE GOLF is the only game I know when the players ALL start with the same chance of winning, for example if your handicap is 20 and the person you are playing has a handicap of 10 then they would need to beat you by 11 stokes to win.

Match play: This is played hole by hole, the player taking the least number of stokes between tee and hole wins the hole. The one who wins the most holes wins *once handicaps have been taken into account.

Stroke play you need to play consistent golf over the 18 holes hole the winner is the player taking the fewest stokes over the full 18 holes.
Again once handicaps have been taken into account.
The term par refers to the number of strokes the pro-golf would use in completing a particular hole.

Par ranges from three to five stokes. If you made par on every hole your total score would be 72 for 18 holes -which is why the course is referred to as a par 72.
General Course information:

On short holes 100-200 yd they are called par three holes, it is possible to make a hole in one, with a perfect shot and more than a fair share of luck.
Long par five holes vary in distance between 450 and 550 yards all with varying degrees of difficulty, which on your score card we be shown as Index a hole which index 1 is considered to be the most difficult hole to play, the higher the number the easier the hole.

Tee
Is the area from which you play the first shot on every hole? A-tee is also the small peg, which you place in the ground on the Tee area place the ball on top so you get a clean contact with the ball when you drive the ball towards the fairway.

Par
The number of golf strokes a pro-player would expect to take on each hole (or better).

Bogey
One stoke over par. So if the hole is on the card as a par 4 and you take 5 strokes from tee to in the hole that is refer to as a bogey hole.

Birdie
Is one stroke under par so again if the hole on the card is shown as a par 4 and you only take 3 strokes from tee to in the hole you have play well and it is referred to as a birdie.

Eagle
Two strokes under par. Now that is very rare and when you start score eagles then you for sure will not need this book any more.
