How long does it take for a golf ball to fall from rest for a distance of 11.8 m?

(a) How long does it take for a golf ball to fall from rest for a distance of 11.8 m? (b) How far would the ball fall in twice that time?

  1. Ben C says:

    Use the equation s = ut + ½at².

    s is distance
    u is initial velocity (zero)
    a is gravitational acceleration
    t is the time that you are trying to find

  2. stmc says:

    x=1/2at^2
    -11.8m = 1/2(-9.8m/s^2)t^2
    t= 1.55s

    1.55s x 2= 3.1s

    x=1/2at^2
    x= 1/2(-9.8m/s^2)(3.1s)^2
    x= -47.1m

    the negative means downward.

  3. dhaminator says:

    Write down this equation

    a)

    d=(1/2)at^2
    11.8=(1/2)(9.8)t^2
    2.4=t^2
    1.55s=t

    b)

    d=(1/2)at^2
    d=(1/2)(9.8)(2*1.55)^2
    d=47.1m
