How much time should you practice in golf?

How many hours per day or per week should I be practicing to become better at golf. I just started taking lessons, so I’m learning about how to swing. What are some suggestions, and techniques about overcoming fatigue. Yesterday I was at the range around 3pm and it was so hot, that my swing was off and I couldn’t practice effectively. I want to learn to become better at the sport..not necessarily to play for the PGA. Also, any suggestions about proper apparel to practicing at the range? I am practice at a public range, it is not a country club.
Also, why do my knuckles feel so sore, like arthritis?

Practice early in the morning while it is still cool outside. Practice every day and take lessons from a golf professional that you could find at your local golf club. The PGA.com website has instructional videos and they can also help locate a professional in your area.

The rules for training muscles are the same for golf. 3 days a week minimum. 6 days a week maximum. How long each time? How long do you have?
The proper apparel for heat is loose fitting, light colors. A hat might help. The most important thing is to stay hydrated. Golf will not keep you in shape, unless you walk while playing a course. To build endurance, you do aerobics. Your golf pro will be giving you wonderful, hard to follow advice about your knuckles, unless you do have arthritis.

You need to give your body a break from “full swing” practice. Break it up by just practicing your short game (chipping, pitching, and putting). Maybe do full swing practice like 3 or 4 times a week. The reason your knuckles hurt is because, golf like a lot of sports such as skiing, use and stress different muscles in a way your body isn’t used to. Working on your short game will do wonders for your game and scoring while giving your body time to recoup. Buy yourself a shag bag and hit the chipping practice area, putting green, or sand bunker. You will be surprised how your total game improves.

    Good luck and have fun!

What does your teacher say about practice time? Make sure that you are efficient with your practice. Hitting the heck out of your driver three days per week will probably lead to bad habits, so be efficient and practical.

Practice time is all relevant. How much time do you have? How much money do you have? Just HOW good do you want to get? You can OVER practice. I am an avid golfer and practice is very important. WHAT you practice gets over looked by MOST golfers. MOST golfers are 15+ or 20+ handicappers and they practice by going to the range a few times and week BEATING the driver for an hour. They forget that golf involves driving the ball, iron play, chipping, sand shots and putting–but they NEVER practice them! I play to a 8+ handicap now (which means I usually avg around 80 for 18 holes).

To play your best divide up whatever time you have amongst: hitting your irons PW – 3, hitting your 5-wood, 3-wood and driver, then go to the chipping and putting green. Let’s say you have 2 hrs to practice on one given day. Spend 1 hour on the green and then another 1/2hr chipping and sand shots and the final 1/2hr putting. Putting is less strenuous and is usually good to finish up w/this.

Some people hate practicing putting and chipping…those people will usually not get better. Most golf shots probably occur w/in 120 yards of the green.

    Good luck!

Always remember the ‘golden rule’ in practicing golf. “Practice does not always make perfect it makes permanence”. It does not matter how much you practice its how you practice. For a beginner, which I assume you are, practice w/ a pro before you start doing it by yourself. Practicing the wrong thing can lead to muscle memory remebering the same swing over and over again. Also try practicing with a small or half a bucket 2-3 times a week. Too much swinging will cause aches and pains which is what your experiencing right now. Good Luck!
