What happens in golf when your ball hits another players?

I was playing golf with my friend this morning and his ball nearly hit mine on the green.

I was wondering what would happen if a ball hit another players and made it move?

Your friend would have a two stroke penalty (since he hit your ball) if you were both on the green. If you were on the green and your friend was hitting onto to the green and hit your ball, then there would be no penalty, but your friend would play the ball from where it lied and you would put your ball back to its original position.

If the stroke which moved your ball was played from off the green, your ball would have to be replaced at its original spot and the person would have to play his ball from the position where it ended. He would incur no penalty. However , if your friend putted his ball from a spot on the green and hit your ball, you would replace your ball from the spot where it was, your friend would play his ball from the spot where it ended but he would incur a penalty of two strokes in stroke play and loss of hole in match play. thatissocheap is right for stroke play. I don’t know why people insist on giving a thumbs down to the right answer.

In match play, there is no penalty.
