What is the best type of oil to use in a 1998 Golf Semi Synthetic or the ordinary oil?

1998 1.4 Petrol Golf , 1998 – 2001 type,
Some one told that Semi Synthetic did not appear untill 2000 and that ordinary oil would be the best to use for the 1998-2001 version Golf not the Semi Synthetic. Really Appreciate your help.

If your engine is in perfect shape then synthetic or semisynthetic will always be best. If, however, your engine has some wear in it you may lose compression if you put synthetic. I put Mobile 1 in an old car once and i lost about 25 psi of compression in each cylinder. I switched back to regualr oil and the compression came back to the level it was supposed to be at. Synthetic is thinner so it doesnt provide a seal around the piston ring like regular oil does.

According to how you would like to economise
synthetic oil is costy but you will have longer periods of oil change .
ordinary oil is subjected to degrade in sever conditions

Semi or full synthetic will flow better in cold start-ups and get around the top of your engine quicker, less wear. Also better in extreme heat, but most important do your oil changes regularly regardless.
