What is the surface area of a golf ball?
One of my math problems required finding the surface area of a golf ball, but it was just an estimate. It’s asking me if 9 in.^2 is bigger or smaller than the actual surface area of the golf ball. Does anyone know the actual surface area of a golf ball?
check this out:
Most golfballs have a diameter of 1.68 inches. That’s a radius of 0.84 inches.
The formula for surface area of a smooth sphere is:
S.A. = 4 pi r²
That comes out to approximately:
9.3 sq. inches
Golfballs actually have more surface area than that because of the “dimples” out the outside. Your estimate is pretty close, but is probably slightly under the true surface area of a golfball.
golf balls are spheres so you can apply the formula:
4*pie(22/7)*radius*radius
