Why do i get really bad gas mileage on my 4 cylinder vw golf?

It is a 2002 Golf and i just bought it. I though they were amaizing on gas, but not this one it will spend a whole gas tank in a week and i only drive it to school, school is like 5 minutes away. Our 8 cylinder jeep is more efficient on gas than this little 4 cylinder.

What can I do ?

    sounds like u have some bad o2 sensors go to advanced auto and have them do a computer ck
